FN FAL's are banned from import now but you can get American made DSA FAL's. Same shit with H&K 91's you have to buy American made PTR 91 if you want a new gun. You can still buy both on the used market but the prices are insane.
Here's my most recent AR, a 458 I picked up cheap. Shoots well and I killed a hog with it. I let a guy at work borrow it and he killed a bear. I have a couple of 223 ARs and used to have a 6.8 SPC that I sold because I never shot it. I like bolt actions a lot more because most of my shooting is suppressed.

They are dirt cheap and very heavily marketed. Like everything,they were cooler before everyone had one... the first AR I built after the ban ended cost me $1200 for a pretty low end one. Now you can make one better than that for $550 or so.
I guess that's also part of the attraction, they are very easily upgraded or built at home. You can buy parts kits and just slap them into a $40 lower receiver (the lower "half" is the "gun" part, the upper half is not a gun legally).
