You can buy a decent Ruger in 380 for like 280 - 325 dollars or a M&P for 380. Dont be afraid to buy rimfire/22lr either. The guns are cheap and so is the ammo. Even pic related (my old carry gun) weighs just as much as my HK45c despite being less than half its size
My carry progression has gone:
Walther PPK/S > S&W Model 19 > Chiappa Rhino > Colt Detective Special > HK45c
As you can tell it's my first non-metal frame carry gun. You should try it some time, you know next time you actually leave your couch and consider getting a CCL for a change you airchair-commando fudd.

Not a meme, but 9mm is a great round from a barrel of the correct length. It's comparable to 38 special +p

Handguns are more complex and finicky. Their fit and tuning has to be absolutely perfect for the tilt locking barrel to perfectly time with the slide, ejector, extractor, magazine feed, etc. More moving parts, smaller scale, much more that can go wrong.
You should build a 1911, and then an AR-15 tell me what is easier to get right.

I'm always looking to try the next big thing, but I keep coming back to that round. It's just so perfect for .38 special +P.
