I have always been a nationalist and my resolve has only grown stronger. And you don't go dicking around someone else's backyard when your own affairs aren't in order. Why send aid to other countries when there are people homeless and hungry here? Why spend money bombing and rebuilding other countries when our infrastructure is fucked? Why should we let more people in when it's already a logistical nightmare dealing with what we've got? You draw borders because resources are limited whether you like it or not. Nationalism doesn't hold any country to be superior.
The idea is that your country and my country are both superior to what they would be if we tried to mash them together. To separate them allows them to be as different as they naturally can be, causes specialization which enlivens trade, promotes tourism by keeping these places unique and interesting to each other; and cuts down on strife between peoples and cultures, by making most intermingling voluntary on an individual level instead of forcing dramatically different groups of people to live together.
