There's no real training involved, I shot a total of 30 rounds on two occasions.
Other than that it's like summer camp except it's sometimes winter and cold as fuck, and you have to wake up at 2am to stand watch for 2 hours with a friend.
But we had WiFi and smartphones really helped pass the time.

Back in the golden days the military was an additional step that prepared you for the world out there.
They had courses which trained you for most hard-to-get jobs (e.g. train engineer, pilot, etc), and after serving you were basically guaranteed a job in that field.
I wouldn't have minded serving for a year.

In the military you make friends, develop self discipline and can learn an office. When I did the mandatory military service, I learned how to shot (the best of the unit with a cetmeton), I have alot of funny memories, and shit.

I think conscription is wrong, I love the idea of conscripting and how it would be good to go and do a practical non combat role in the armed service and get a trade from it despite the fact i have assburgers and got rejected, however if someone outright refuses the service then he should suffer no consequences. It is akin to slavery in some respect and though i believe it would build good character the concept of being pressed against your will to carry out a venture not of your choosing on penalty if imprisonment of refusal of rights and benefits granted by the state to every tax paying citizen is morally wrong
