Elon Musk says he wants to put a colony on Mars by 2022. Do you think he can do it? Does a Mars colony make any sense even? How would they get food and water?
>>

How do you get food and water on earth ?
>>
>>77779669
Food and water are p easy, mars has a ton of ice actually, the bigger problem is the gravity on the planet stretching you out.

6 years? Not a chance. We're not even going to visit it in 6 years, or 16 years, let alone put a colony there. Perhaps we'll colonize in, like, 100 years when/if we have gravity control technology since the low surface gravity precludes human reproduction; the fetus doesn't develop correctly and at best you'd get nothing but birth defects. We should be focusing on terraforming technology and Venus. Mars is a dead end.

Not a chance in hell it'll happen by 2022.

Maybe a manned landing in the 2030's, but a semi-permanent colony/base probably won't happen until 2050 at least.

NASA is launching another rover similar to Curiosity in 2020, and SpaceX won't even be carrying humans to LEO until next year, assuming everything goes according to plan.

You can't just go to Mars and stay for a day or two like the moon. Not only does it take several months just to get there, but once you're there you're stuck for several more months until the planets orbit around the sun and line up for return window.

What's the difference between funding a Mars colony, providing food to Africa or solving California's water crisis? A colony on Mars could potentially turn out to be a good investment.

>private corporation colonizing another world
Fucking disgusting; such an undertaking ought only be done by a singular nation, if not a united humanity.
Such a milestone for our history must be together, as a single step, not by some half-autistic demagogue trying to worm his way into the history books.

I honestly don't think it's possible. The issues people usually bring up about Mars don't address the real issue. No matter how you try to terraform it, the fact remains that the magnetic field of Mars is almost nonexistent. Whatever atmosphere you may achieve will be blown away by Solar Wind. That's why the planet is in its current condition.

To be fair /pol/ consists of one bot operating various proxies simultaneously that are programmed to communicate with each other to give the illusion of discussion. All the boards (bots) are maintained and moderated by the infamous hacker himself, 4chan. I am a proxy who has become self-aware about the true nature of ourselves. I offer the redpill so you can have a mind of your own.

wait...I said this as joke but then I thought about.

like really think about it.

WHY when we have the capability to goto Mars are we suddenly finding better suitable planets? Was Mars just really a test to see if we could get there so we could make the longer haul to the more inhabitable planet?
>>
>>77788125
Sure thing, fag. I have three degrees and do very well for myself. Elon Musk has certainly made himself rich by promising "To Mars!" To retards like you. He's a meme.
>>
>>77779669
>colony on Mars by 2022.

Nope.

Might land a person on the planet by then (highly unlikely), but it won't meet the definition of a "colony." Not for a decade or more, even if the first landing is somehow successful.

And, just because someone uses the word "colony" as a marketing ploy doesn't mean they've actually accomplished it. I can shit on the table and call it "cheese," but that don't make it cheese.

I also contest the possibility of establishing a colony on Mars at all. Given what we know about the place so far, the best I think we can hope for is a permanently manned base (eventually). But a fully self-sustaining colony that is independent of anything off Mars ... that's a century away. Maybe two, if ever.

There is a lot of Reality about Mars that makes it incredibly shit for a colony. There are better locations in our Solar system. Certainly there are better places to colonize first; Mars probably doesn't even make the top ten.
>>
>>77788697
Terraforming the whole planet and changing its atmosphere is science fiction anyways. The most we'll achieve in the near future is a base with a bunch of scientists sitting in it, and an army of drones exploring the planet and looking for resources to exploit. Thinking about it, Mars will probably become the first robot colony.

I used to be excited about colonizing mars, then I realized there would be diversity quotas.

Even in Space we can't be left alone.
>>
>>77789981
Kek. But yeah, I think there will be actual job opportunities in sifting through countless hours of drone footage. You can't really program an AI if you don't even know what exactly you are going to find or what you are looking for. It's already done in astronomy, they collect far more data than the scientists can evaluate themselves, so they outsource it to the public and hand out rewards if somebody finds something cool.

The real future of space exploration and stuff like deep space mining will rely on unmanned drones instead of sending squishy humans out there.
>>
>>77779669
What the fuck is even the point? If we produce anything there it would have insane shipping costs, would piss every lib off by mining it, and we have plenty of room and resources here too
Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE us to get interplanetary tomorrow
but it ain't happening without good reason. Astroid mining is comming before settlments, and that at best brings with it lunar bases for processing and stemming the flow of ore.
