Elon Musk says he wants to put a colony on Mars by 2022. Do you think he can do it? Does a Mars colony make any sense even? How would they get food and water?
>>77779669
How do you get food and water on earth ?
>>77779669
Food and water are p easy, mars has a ton of ice actually, the bigger problem is the gravity on the planet stretching you out.
I'd fucking go. Get me the fuck off this dumb shithole.
Read this shit. It's 100% doable.
> TL,DR: Nuclear powered chemical reacors arrive early and start making water, oxygen, and rocket fuel for the return flight, if any
>>77779669
6 years? Not a chance. We're not even going to visit it in 6 years, or 16 years, let alone put a colony there. Perhaps we'll colonize in, like, 100 years when/if we have gravity control technology since the low surface gravity precludes human reproduction; the fetus doesn't develop correctly and at best you'd get nothing but birth defects. We should be focusing on terraforming technology and Venus. Mars is a dead end.
But Mars doesn't exist!

>colony on Mars by 2022.
Nope.
Might land a person on the planet by then (highly unlikely), but it won't meet the definition of a "colony." Not for a decade or more, even if the first landing is somehow successful.
And, just because someone uses the word "colony" as a marketing ploy doesn't mean they've actually accomplished it. I can shit on the table and call it "cheese," but that don't make it cheese.
I also contest the possibility of establishing a colony on Mars at all. Given what we know about the place so far, the best I think we can hope for is a permanently manned base (eventually). But a fully self-sustaining colony that is independent of anything off Mars ... that's a century away. Maybe two, if ever.
There is a lot of Reality about Mars that makes it incredibly shit for a colony. There are better locations in our Solar system. Certainly there are better places to colonize first; Mars probably doesn't even make the top ten.
>>77788697
Terraforming the whole planet and changing its atmosphere is science fiction anyways. The most we'll achieve in the near future is a base with a bunch of scientists sitting in it, and an army of drones exploring the planet and looking for resources to exploit. Thinking about it, Mars will probably become the first robot colony.

Kek. But yeah, I think there will be actual job opportunities in sifting through countless hours of drone footage. You can't really program an AI if you don't even know what exactly you are going to find or what you are looking for. It's already done in astronomy, they collect far more data than the scientists can evaluate themselves, so they outsource it to the public and hand out rewards if somebody finds something cool.
The real future of space exploration and stuff like deep space mining will rely on unmanned drones instead of sending squishy humans out there.
