A sperm has either an X or a Y chromosome. If it has an X, than you get an XX female, whereas if it has a Y the result is XY.
For a child to inherit a Y chromosome from someone other than his father, the sperm that produces him has to be X so that the Y from the previous male can be inherited. Even if different tissues inherit different Y's, one of them came from the mother in the same way as mitochondrial DNA.
