Most places I've compared between US - UK have the UK winning on the price of grocery shopping. It's restaurant prices that seem to usually win out in the US. You have to tip because the minimum wage in most US states is very low, and workers in low-skilled, entry-level jobs like waiting and food delivery and such are paid minimum wage. The positive reasons are that there is a huge quantity of arable land combined with nearby navigable rivers for easy nationwide (and global) transport. That's nice to have. It's kind of like China in that regard, but with a billion fewer people. You can imagine the surplus.
The negatives include taxpayer subsidies for industrial farms, industrial farming in general (which includes hormonal beef, chickens shot full of antibiotics, large but watery vegetables and fruits, etc.), and an insane level of routinization and crop-variety loss which has selected for the most commercially-suitable, transportable varieties of foods.
For example, I have thimbleberries (Rubus parviflorus) growing in my yard. They take a bit of effort to harvest and transport without damage, so, they effectively don't exist in the commercial market. Only very high-end products like artisanal preserves and other such items.

I never fucked with anyone's food even when I knew they weren't going to tip. I just served them as fast as possible and got them the fuck out of there, so I could get someone else that was going to pay me into that seat.
If you're a known non tipper, people aren't going to fuck with your food. Your just going to get the bare minimum service so that you can't reasonably complain, and you won't get any of the benefits of those known as good tippers.
