The trial and death of Socrates is pretty neat.

At one point it's discussed if people learn new things or just remember them again. This is based on the concept of a soul that's, according to Socrates, immortal.
If we are to entertain the notion of a soul, thinking we all got one unique is too small minded, in my opinion.
Why not have fragments of a larger collective soul, which still applies to Socrates' logic that we might actually not really learn anything, but rather remember things we already knew?

>>77339108
>That's why I've been careful about reading philosophy
The point in reading philosophy isn't to agree with everything you read. The truth can't be clouded because you have to question everything that you read. As you read more and more the things that you read from different philosophers will often contradict or supplement one another, so you will form your own ideology/philosophy in the end. Be prepared to also question your past beliefs even.
I think you'd save some time by skipping everything between the Ancient Greeks and Hegel though.

Based and did not revive enough credit. Sure, I'd never encourage anyone to read his books considering I don't think it is healthy for my survival, however it makes perfect sense and is truly the human at it's most bare and naked. Not another molyneux fag,

Here's an argument, Truth may or may not be universally preferable, independent of whether one affirms the preferability of truth for oneself. Actions may or may not be purpseful, independent of whether one's actions are purposeful.

Stefan is a cultist, not an argument, but an opinion.

I never understand these threads. Everyone lists a bunch of philosophers, sometimes lists an order to read them. In reality any one of these thinkers could be studied for a lifetime and read and re-read forever with new insights. This is especially true of monoliths like Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, etc

You're better off finding a book that is interesting to you (based on the description) and trying to get as much as you can out if it.

>any of these thinkers could be studied for a lifetime
>therefore you're better off finding a book that seems interesting to you (based on the description) and trying to get as much as you can out of it

I don't think that quite follows.
>>
>>77344642
I just mean that saying

>read this guy

isn't very useful, it really depends on what the reader is looking for
>>
>ctrl-f bible
>1 result

And it's the satanic bible. lmao
>>
>>77345199
In fairness, people who are new to philosophy rarely know in advance what they're looking for.

So it's best to start at the beginning and work your way through it.
>>
>>77345347
There is no "beginning"
>>
>>77345347
They started jotting their thoughts down at one point in time, though.

So what? Neitzsche is an end point? I could have sworn there were other notable people.

The Apologies of Socrates. It's basically a book about free speech and why we need it. Socrates is on trail for disturbing the peace and gods. What really is going on is the senatorial class is tired of Socrates pointing out of much of a dick they all are. Socrates likens himself to a gadfly in his discription of why he is important and why the people and gods need him. He likened Athens to a great and noble steed that the gadfly had to remind of its duties so it did not get too proud.

It's a very /pol/ friendly book and one of the few things worth while that ever came out of greece.

Everything between augustine and hegel is shit

He's not an end point at all. It was just a few suggestions
>>
>>77345938
Oh. The arrows for some reason made the think it was a beginning to end type deal.
>>
>>77346154
No, but there is certainly a chronology.

Spinoza responded to Descartes, Kant to Hume, Hegel to Kant (and by extension Descartes and Spinoza), Nietzsche to everyone.
>>
>>77345347
I like to ask people what they want. "I want to know how to live a good life"- Spinoza and Kant won't be much help there, but Marcus Aurelius and Cicero are a good start since they are easy to read, then they can move on to Aristotle or something else more advanced.

I suppose you're right though, new readers don't usually know what they want. Philosophy should be a 1-1 teacher/student thing imo, where a learned master teaches a student individually
>>

This is a solid list with a continental inflection. If you're going to be competent in philosophy, spend a good amount of time studying the history of philosophy. It's not some area where you pick one guy and just read him. Really you should take the time to do at least one degree in the field. If not, then you're really just a dabbler and imposter as a philosopher.
>>
>>77346703
A degree in the field is pretty much the only way to get through a list like that in one lifetime. It's not that the material was so difficult so much as you need a teacher and sometimes a classroom to discuss the ideas to their fullest extent. Otherwise you'll be at sea, making up an interpretation as you go

Not one mention of an analytic philosopher, Pol truly is garbarge tier.

boring af desu

Flying solo with this stuff is incredibly hard. It helps so much to have a teacher and a group of students with whom to debate and discuss the material.

ITT: /pol/lets gradually realize who little they know and how many years of reading and study lie ahead before being able to make interesting claims about anything related to philosophy. Also ITT: faggots who think you can ready one terrible book and have a sufficient grasp of philosophy.
>>
Does eastern philosophy have any value to it? I read the analects and it was full of silly platitudes and boot-licking. Chinks actually like this shit?
>>
>>77347358

Yes.

Our degenerate modern civilization has much to learn from Confucian teachings
>>
>See a uni course on critical reasoning
>About analysing arguments and common fallacious arguments
>'Hmm this looks interesting, ok I'll take it as an elective'
>Rock up to first lecture
>Lecturer starts to explain what an argument is
>'You can't have an argument without some form of language'
>Some neckbeard Philosophy-major looking loser puts his hand up
>'But what about x!'
>'No, that doesn't work'
>'What about y!'
>proceeds to waste the lecturer's time for like 30 fucking minutes trying to argue the first point in the first slide of the first lecture of the semester
I understood then why philosophers and people who think philosophy are important are fucking losers

Authoritarian drivel. Western egoism destroys it on the ground level, and point for point, western individualism and Buddhist sutras are both superior in every way in my opinion. Look a the fruits of these paths. Eastern philosophy encompasses the submission that was commanded of them whereas western philosophy encompasses the strength that was demanded in the European people.

As a student there are a lot of interesting things you can do if you try to look for new questions or new areas of interest. A good friend of mine is studying with Iain Thompson and is doing interesting work on Heidegger and Hölderlin, and since we talk shop every day I've actually gotten the chance to contribute to papers despite not being a grad student

Nice way to go. I'd also recommend keeping up with philosophy news on a few decent blogs like The Leiter Reports, attending public lectures where possible, getting hold of proper lecture series on the history of philosophy like those done by The Teaching Company (readily available through piratebay), downloading material as needed through http://gen.lib.rus.ec/, and watching the occasional lecture by a prominent philosopher on youtube. All good ways to enhance your own education.
