Decade after decade, every problem could be solved without violence, while violent solutions spectacularly failed (think pointless mayhem of Vietnam) or were considered unthinkable madness (like turning Cold War into nuclear one).

Take the concept of a meme, for instance. I'm not talking about internet humor, I'm talking self-perpetuating concepts and ideas like those "S" things everybody used to draw back in elementary school.
People all post their true thoughts and ideas through imageboards and forums such as this one, as they'll gravitate to the one of their choice; but townies and such who don't have such a firm grasp, and are limited by geography will tend to be a lot more homogeneous.
If nuclear family conservatism is in, then you'll be rewarded and conditioned to perpetuate a traditional Christian lifestyle. You'll also face threats of physical violence and screams of "COMMIE!" if you start deviating from this through introducing something like eastern theology or homosexuality.
While the television and radio were influential, and along with newspapers set the national stage for discussion, I feel like the internet and social media services like Facebook provide something much more reminiscent of a Skinner Box than has ever existed before.
tl;dr: Unprepared townies flock to Facebook and are inundated with the political trends of the past several decades and faced with immediate reward for following the pack and exaggerated acts of reprisal when they stray.
