I have been wrestling with Paz as well, especially his acceptance of caciquismo and his brutal treatment of others who needed his help. But "Laberinto" is an important book and I believe it describes the central Mexico of his time fairly. If anything else, his fugue on "chingar" is worth the price of admission.

Very few people outside the US know Rodriguez. He is a great thinker, and Mexicans would certainly benefit from reading what he has to say on culture and identity. The issue though is that none of his books are translated into Spanish.
Octavio Paz up until today is mostly right about Mexico. For those of you not yet familiar with Paz and his ideas I recommend to grab a copy of "Itinerario critico." It's an excellent anthology for those not yet familiar with his ideas.

Paz was many things and many of his ideas changed over time, particularly when it comes to el PRI and socialism.
But Paz was a consistent and ardent promoter of freedom. Read Krauze's "El poeta y la revolucion". That is THE book on Paz, his life and thought.
I believe that Paz in the end became something like the Mexican Robert Nisbet. Read "The Quest for Community" if you haven't, it's a brilliant book!
