Because... supposedly... the Indo-European people brought that symbol with them everywhere they conquered, and "the Nordic race" (which most Germans supposedly were part of) was the best representative of the proto-Indo-Europeans. That's the gist of it anyway.

Hitler himself wasn't really into all that German esotericism stuff, actually.

But it's an apt symbol for the movement and idea, in that basically it is about unity and wholeness... about the culture, aesthetic and state unified and radiating positively from one Eternal Truth (as opposed to a movement based in critique or rebellion against order)
