Well, there just is this strange culture thing, while we as people mostly hate westerners, everything imported from the west is considered better than anything russian almost 100% of the time regardless of quality. It is one of long-lasting traditions of soviet culture. We also believe(and rightfully so) that life in the west in general is better than in Russia.
As for the medical education, I can't say for sure, but it is generally considered decent in the world standards, but I believe a bit outdated, but not to the point of decades behind. For example, in my shithole home town a Medical University is very respected and there is shitton of foreigners from Africa, India, China, South-East Asia and the like. Literally many(perhaps tens of) thousands of people.
I don't know what to tell about the cold, but it does depend on the location, and year-to-year it can be very different. But winter is one of the only times in year when Russia can be consistently beautiful.
As for the corruption, I, as an assburger, perhaps can't understand the subtle incentives, but I haven't openly met any in my life, though everyone from family to friends had, though the corruptness of the state is common knowledge here.
Also, I can't really describe the "Life" here in itself depressing, you can find many great moments and wonderful people if you know where to look, but the other side of the coin may hit you hard if you are not careful.
Try to find some russian m8, we generally wouldn't look on your race as long as you speak some russian, so they can teach you what to look for and what to avoid.
Do note that the culture of patriarchy and alpha-males is still prevalent here, however at least some parts of prison-culture exist in our society as subcultures, such as gopnics.
