In the past it was historically significant and when the Muslim's took it over during the time of Muhamed it was turned into their place of worship.
They took everything that was inside and got rid of it (thousands of years worth of precious artifacts of ancient religions) because they saw them as idols, then turned it into their own place by adding various elements to it over the years.
