We'd get angry and even more active, politically. It would produce something of a stalemate, as just banning guns isn't the same as being able to seize them. We wouldn't be able to go shoot at the range or hunt, so some of that time would go to political organization (which is already pretty influential here). Some people would become martyrs in jail for defending themselves, their homes or their families with firearms. Crime would increase, as criminals expect people to be less willing to defend themselves and go to jail.
I imagine that eventually, some part or parts of the country would tell the feds to go fuck themselves. Not secede, but just disagree, like some of our states do with cannabis.

I talked to a guy in the states once who lived near one of those gun buyback things. He made a dozen pipe shotguns in his garage, fired them all a couple times and dropped them off with some story about how he made them for a group of friends who wanted to try duck hunting or something and he didn't know what to do with these "dangerous weapons" now.
iirc they only paid him for half of them and it was one of the ones where they only give you giftcards, but he still got a few hundred bucks for like 30$ of plumping supplies and a couple afternoon's work in his garage.
That was more than a decade ago now. Do they still do those buyback programs?

The effectiveness depends on which states listen and which states dissent.
Most red states in this image would dissent and probably leave the union.
Youd probably even see some states split in half over it. Illinois for example where practically the entire state is run by chicago politics. Id southern Illinois would leave the state and side with the red states
