As someone who has met and spoken with JT several times, I can confirm that you are (partly) wrong.
He is ambitious, and he views himself as being the in-touch politician that can bring the "real Canadians" what they want and need - and make Canada a proud, progressive country for the 21st century. Whether that gives him a messiah complex or not is subjective; I would say no, but I understand why some say yes.
Nonetheless, as an individual he is not overly bright. His analytical abilities are sub-par. He understands that his name and looks have gotten him very far in life, however, and so he relies on specialists in other fields to give him information.
Everything is subject to his gut feeling though.
All in all, he isn't a bad prime minister and he won't ruin Canada or whatever the Right wants you to believe. But he is not personally a genius, nor will he save Canada or whatever the Left wants you to believe.
