Clarence is a great topic for discussion. It started out as a silly cartoon about a goofy kid and his antics, drawn just like ever other cartoon nowadays.

One of the central themes of the show is that everyone is psychologically fucked up. The only difference is that Shinji doesn't put up a front, so he comes off as a whiny cunt. Asuka is essentially a traumatized child with virtually no self-esteem, desperate for attention and praise, so she overcompensates by working hard and acting tough.
Rei is emotionally broken, and is basically just a clone that Gendo keeps as a replacement for his wife. Misato covers up her problems by being a slutty drunk, and Ritsuko does the same by being a workaholic and fucking Gendo (who is just using her). Ritsuko's mother went insane, shot the first Rei clone, then committed suicide. Asuka's mother went batshit insane, and was partially absorbed into Unit-02. Shinji's mother, probably the most stable female in the entire show, was absorbed into Unit-01.
With the exception of Rei and Shinji's dead mother, all the characters who have an influence on the fate of the world in the show are men. Gendo, Shinji, Fuyutsuki, Kaworu, Kaji, Keel Lorenz.
That being said, the show does have an extremely unrealistic amount of genius level female scientists, but half the reason for this was because of its existential themes about creation, relationships, sexuality, angst and particularly mothers as caregivers. All the pilots are literally piloting their Evas' from the Evas' womb, and each Eva contains it's pilot's mother's soul.

It stands to reason that a lot of people aren't happy in today's world. They aren't trying to make us happy, changing the world is too hard, or maybe it's not profitable enough.
Instead, they're engineering humans who will be happy in their utopia, a world where they rule. Is that moral or immoral though? If an animal is in pain, we put it down. We as humans are capable of making that decision using our thought process, and moral compass.
Isn't that what "they" are doing? We're obviously pained, so the humane thing is to hasten our death, and usher in a people who are happy in industrialized slavery.
In short, it would be immoral and cruel to put you or I in that situation. But, our children's children, that's a another animal all together, they've been bred for it, they'd be happy like that. So, the easy answer is to quietly euthanize us.

It's ugly, flat, and assembly line-like when made for TV but goes back to simple solid 1930s cartoon designs when done in student projects (at least in how features wrap around the character forms). I sort of like what I see students do but in a post-Simpsons/Family Guy world, TV animation is still stagnated by talking heads only capable of standing upright no matter how you try to dress it up.
