Eugenics is hard to create in principle because:
- everybody has about 7-9 lethal random mutations in their DNA, and expression of these is dependent on allele pairing (dominance vs recessive). Most of the time you have a functioning allele due to genetic diversity which overrides the lethality of mutation.
- bottlenecks and selection reduce variation in gene pools which can have adverse affects with the ability for spread of contagions and allow greater probability for harmful recessive problems to pop up (i.e. hemophilia)
- selection for particular genes in the short run may be adverse for the long run in if you don't have variation, or if pathogens evolve around your selection. Malaria is only a problem to humans because we evolved to not have the sugar it initially binds to -- which was great because we became immune for a while. However, the malaria eventually evolved to attach to another sugar, which ended up being worse for us (look up CMP-N-acetylneuraminic acid hydroxylase)
- evolution does a good job of eugenics by itself, because survival of the 'fittest' is not the strongest or smartest, but whoever best fits in their environment. If 100,000 years ago all the biggest men decided to kill every weak one to create the 'best' then we might not have evolved the way we have.
- without GM you can't just put a sperm in egg and know the outcome, because of innumerable possible combination of genes.
