Before I moved to where I'm at, a local church would give out expired goods one day a month. I would get anything shelf-stable and store it. Cans last 4-8 years, I'd avoid them, personally. Crisco is the fat that stores the best, and unfortunately, meat stores best frozen. Nothing else stores that long, and who wants to re-buy all their food storage every four years? Not me.
So yeah, start with rice and dry beans. Some salt and crisco (or you can freeze other food oils) are good. Dehydrated vegetables are a good idea, but much less cost and calorie efficient than grains/beans.

Anyway. Bleach and a Berkey are good temporary solutions, but if the grid goes down, you really just need a clean water source. Get your well/spring/whatever tested, and as long as it's nothing that will kill you, start getting used to it. If you survive long enough post-collapse, you'll run out of (effective) means to filter. For a bag, a lifestraw is a good idea, but a better one is to just already live at your retreat rather than make a perilous and dangerous journey there, risking yourself and your family along the way.
