I think a lot of it comes from the struggle for acceptance by the previous generation, while still trying to maintain a unique identity. The shift in how the world operates since the last generation is massive. The internet, globalization, mass comm in the palm of your hand, instantaneous information that has been filtered and brought to w/e organization's bias.
The world has become much larger, and much faster. All of our information is about quick regurgitation and not mastery or critical understanding. Now, we have educated a large chunk of millennials in college to believe things that are starkly different from the reality they've known and the values they've been taught.
Literally our generation is locked in a battle for mind control and position control. And the whole time, the majority of our peers will very much be these self centered, completely unaware, truly actually truly bigoted, and oddly racist, despite the fact that they tout their moral superiority over everyone and suppress free speech etc.

When I was young, I grew up around my family. I observed many of the interactions my parents and grandparents had. My grandparents were the epitome of conservative, whereas my mom became one of the bra-burning generation. I listened for years as my mother would condemn and contradict everything my grandfather said politically. She seemed so sure of herself that I went along with almost everything she had to say.........until i became an adult. Then I realized (very harshly) that my grandfather was spot on about so much.

I have bore witness to her shittalking her husband and actively trying to sabotage her children's relationships with their father because he wasn't being cooperative with money for HER INDIVIDUALLY.
I speak with them about the dangers of the world, and always give them the differentiation from something that is anecdotal from me or may contain a bias, vs something that can be proven w/ statistics. Whenever their mother of grandmother hears me talking to them, they will attempt to insult, shame, or belittle me and tell my nephews not to listen to their uncle. Fortuitously,I've warned them of how insults are a male tactic but shaming (esp unnecessarily) is a woman's tactic. They are beginning to see the hypocrisies of the world today, but they are still hesitant to believe because what they've been taught. Lots of work to do indeed.

I also think Gen X is too big too. I think at 37-46 you are the kids of Young Boomers. They wanted to ensure their kids got free information and no painful experiences because they saw how angry Gen X was from drugged out Boomers. Thus the Helicopter Parents were born and technology helped keep up the protective bubble on Snowflake. People could now curate their entire lives online, speaking to literally only who they wanted too, seeing literally only the movies and shows they wanted too, doing nothing but being in their rooms and going to private school/day care and they were the most awarded and coddled generation ever.
They go to college and say "hey, I am paying all of this money and I can't take a bit of criticism so you should CATER to ME" again wanting to "curate" if you will all the experiences they receive in college.
