It's basically a specific computer course now. You use several tools that implement algorithms, statistics and shit and they can automatically visualize stuff or you can manually do it.
And it's great that you live in new zealand. There's a free datamining tool called Weka created by Waikato there in NZ. It's pretty much barebones but can do good shit. Mostly used by college students learning the course. There's R too.
