I never played Eve, but I always regarded them as really pushing the bounds of what MMOs could be. Loved reading normie articles about corp politics. The last MMO I was actually interested in was Anarchy Online, whose technical flaws I could overlook because the amount of player agency in PVP meta-game conflict and character building was unmatched at the time.

The industry is so desperate to cling to life that they're inducing self implosion on the premise that the act might bring them good press and they could resurrect from the ashes.
