Default means you go cold turkey. It means you survive on only what you can produce. Maybe you get some external support, but you cannot rely on getting it.
Default means basically firing basically every government employee, and stopping/reducing welfare transfer payments, because there IS NO MONEY. It means actually turning off the electricity and water to people that don't or can't pay the bills.
It is austerity 1000x. It is a brief horrible recession. It would be like a wildfire burning away all the deadwood and inefficiency all across your country. And like a wildfire, when it is done soon green shoots will start poking out of the ground. But it will be HARD.
And I don't think you guys are prepared for how bad it can be; I think your politicians believe this to be true and string you along at the ECB while you slowly rot; a fate worse than death.

Greece cannot use the debts as a bargaining chip. That is what Varoufakis tried to do as finance minister. "Game Theory" he said. The problem is that only works if the Germans believe there is a chance of default. The Germans realized the Greeks were too frightened of default, and held their line.
Then Greece folded.
There is no chance of escaping this until Greeks are willing to go full austerity. There is no chance of negotiating with Germany until all Greeks are so desperate they will go the distance and say fuck you, we will live on our own.

But other than that it used to be pretty normal for a country to be able to support its own economy, especially one where you have a lot of ocean, trade routes, good weather to grow things. Maybe take a look at why your advantages aren't working out for you.
