It's not that unrealistic to change a party from inside like Trump is doing. Third parties fail and sputter out more often than not.

Weld was chosen for practical political reasons. He's another off a pretty short list of LP candidates who have actually held a major office successfully, who has won elections and worked in government. Even if we hardcore libertarians might prefer someone *without* such experience that radicalism is exactly what makes us outside the pale to the normies, and we're going to have to have some of them voting for us to win.
And Weld's record on gun control isn't nearly as bad as the shills want to meme it. He supported some legislation back in the early 90s that he should not have. Anyone that's actually got that practical real world experience has wound up having to take a position on one thing or another, at one time or another, that the purists would object to.
Here's what Weld said himself on the subject recently.
>I am a lifelong hunter and gun owner. In 1993, however, as Governor of Massachusetts, I went along with some modest restrictions on certain types of firearms. I was deeply concerned about gun violence, and frankly, the people I represented were demanding action. Sometimes, governing involves tough choices, and I had to make more than a few.
