How old were you when those books were required reading? In Britain secondary school ends at age 16 (GCSE examinations are taken at this age), afterwards English literature is an optional subject.
My school's GCSE curriculum consisted of Macbeth, a short story called An Inspector Calls, The Raven, and various forgettable works; one poem we were required to study was about a teenage girl who wound up drunk, had unprotected sex, became pregnant, then later contemplated abortion and complained of people's prejudices against her. I should also add that I was in the highest class for English. The curriculum put me off reading for one or two years after finishing my GCSE examinations. Some of the poems we had to read were fucking appalling.
