Slavs are a linguistic group. When Slavic tribes arrived in southeastern Europe some 1400 years ago, they assimilated people who lived there (Illyrians, Italic people, Vlachs, Dacians etc.). These various groups who were native to the Balkan region most likely significantly outnumbered the arriving Slavs.
Something similar happened in Anatolia 1000 years ago when the central Asian Turkic tribes arrived and slowly assimilated native Anatolians that had been living there for thousands of years (Greeks, Armenians and Georgians).
Just look at Czech Republic and how close genetically it is to Austria. They're almost indistinguishable. The only difference is Czechs speak a Slavic language.

There is a noticeable divide between Croatians from Northwestern Croatia and those from the rest of the country. Those from the northwest cluster with Slovenes, Czechs, Slovaks, and Poles...in short, West Slavs.
The rest of us cluster with the Balkans which is certainly due to having a significant amount of Illyrian/Vlach/Roman/whatever heritage.

Illyrians were long gone by the time Slavs showed up. All those Balkan peoples got assimilated to one degree or another during the Roman Empire, with Thracians holding out the longest and forming a good chunk of what would become Greek Macedonians, Bulgars, Serbs, and others including Albanians.
The Romance-speaking peoples of the Balkans post-Roman Empire are known as the Vlachs, some of whom still exist to this day. They had a huge role in the composition of today's ethnic groups in the Balkans.

Pretty much all Serbs from Uzice come from Stara Hercegovina (today's Northern and Northwestern Montenegro) and from Eastern Hercegovina.
All Serbs from Lika trace their roots back to the similar area: East Hercegovina, Stara Hercegovina, Southeastern Bosna, and Stari Vlah (just over the border in Serbia).

Just letting you know that most Serbs in Croatia, especially in Lika are not actually Serbs, at least not ethnically.
They're what we used to call (some still do, mostly old people) 'Vlahi' (Vlachs) who started calling themselves Serbs only 100-150 years ago because of their orthodox faith. That's not to say that none of them are ethnic Serbs, but their origins are not very clear and the reason they're called Serbs is mainly because they're Orthodox Christians. Most of them trace their roots to nomadic people from various parts of southeastern Europe who got forcefully settled in Lika by the Turks because it was almost completely empty of life 400-500 years ago. To this day, Lika is very sparsely populated and everyone there knows exactly where they come from based on their last names.

I've actually got an excellent paper analyzing the demography of Lika after 1700 listing the surnames and descent of all people who settled there around that time.
It was emptied out prior to that except for only a tiny amount of Croatians. Five different types of peoples are listed, four who belong to Croats, one group (Vlasi) who are Serbs.
The four Croat groups who were there around 1700 were:
Kranjci (from Slovenia along the Croatian border)
Bunjevci (the overwhelming majority of Croats who settled there and formed the largest population of Catholics, over 70%. They came from Dalmatia and Hercegovina and most likely had Vlach heritage).
Turci (Those who were Muslims and didn't flee but instead converted/reverted to Catholicism. You can tell who they are by their surnames)
Plemeniti Hrvati (Croats who didn't flee).

My mother's side is mostly Bunjevci and old Croats, while my father's side is mostly Croats (continental Dalmatia, specifically Vrlika) and ex-muslim Croats from Lika (converted to Islam then back to Catholicism when the Turks left).
Who knows, some of them might be actual Turks, but we don't really know.

If you're referring to the Serb exodus from Kosovo in the late 17th century they mainly went north all the way to today's southern parts of Hungary. Some made their way to what is today's Eastern Montenegro as well.
The term 'Vlach' was used officially to refer not just to the Orthodox who settled in Croatia but also to some Catholics as well. The reason is that the term "Vlach" had a legal meaning in that they were spared some taxation and duties as privileges in return for military service. They were also known for being shepherds and were up until that point semi-nomadic.
