>It started innocently enough – a seven-year-old, known as “C,” finding and opening an encouraging note and a Bible verse from his mom at lunch. What happened next, however, became a police matter. If only it had stopped with little “C” reading the notes from his mother, Christina Zavala, and putting them away quietly like a good little child of communism. But it didn’t. Instead, the boy started showing them to his friends during lunch time. The friends, exposed to the offending material (Bible verses), then began to expect to see C’s notes every day at lunch, which often included – gasp – short Bible stories to give the verses context.
>Thankfully, authorities were made aware when one of the unwitting victims, a little girl, showed one of the notes to her teacher, saying, “this is the most beautiful story I’ve ever seen.” Acting quickly, the dutiful teacher banned the notes from distribution, wisely citing “separation of church and state.” C would be allowed to share the Bible verses, but only at the school gate after the final bell.
>C’s mother, Mrs. Zavala, apparently not understanding what separation of church and state means, wrote the school in protest. C was appropriately reprimanded to tears in front of his entire class and told to stop sharing his mother’s notes or talking about religion to others.
