Harper killed the Canadian conservative party with his greed,. He replaced everyone in a position of power with his cronies. This led to the party moving away from it's real values to just being a big tax cut for oil companies.
With Harper out the party is currently in a recovery stage but we have to make sure the new figurehead and their backers represent right wing interests instead of corporate interests, the difference being that a party based on right wing values will embrace nationalistic views and make goals of economic recovery instead of more tax cuts and meaningless/detrimental left-wing propaganda legislation
Hopefully the Tories can find some leadership soon because Trudeau is like a fish out of water when it comes to anything other than publicity stunts and it shows.

It depends on who you take. The US took in a bunch of Syrian christians over the decades and they ended up being pretty top notch immigrants.
But those were Syrian Christians escaping persecution. At least it's a positive that Syria is a civilized country we aren't talking about some backwards shithole like Afghanistan.
What's your unemployment like in Canada? Are there places in less desirable regions in Canada that need workers? That's what the US does with 'fugees- they settle them in low cost of living areas that need workers. Another side effect of this is that they end up in almost all white areas so they stick out and can't plan anything without people noticing

That's why you'll be driving through the US and run into some backwater hamlet to get gas and suddenly there are like 4 restaurants all owned by immigrant fugees who really, really like america.
Of course these are the real refugees, people who were resettled. People who just immigrate don't get any more help and tend to congregate in cities.
We did the same thing with communist refugees from Eastern Europe during the 80s once they could escape easier and we did the same thing in the 70s with the Lao and Hmong that fought on the US side during the Vietnam War.

yeah Pittsburg(h) isn't the nicest. It's an old coal city that really shouldn't exist anymore but they transitioned it into regional banking and some light tech.
It had a resurgence because rent and factory space got so cheap because the city was essentially a wasteland.
