OP, why WOULDN'T Africans want to be left to their own devices? If the African nations can't be self-sufficient, then neither can they ever be real countries. It might be tough to persist at first, but it would be good in the long run. They could conceivably be - well, not well-off - but on par with like Latin America or something if they could get their shit together. Being fealty states of the EU, as comfy as it may be, stands in the way of that.

The only reason they have something resembling an economy are european 'fair trade' organisations.
