I ran away from home in North Idaho when I was a year older than this kid. I just went camping for two weeks. It was the best two weeks of my childhood. It changed me mentally, woke me up. I became very mature very quickly. I've spent weeks in the deep woods every summer since then. I've camped in forrests around the world.
All of our ancestors grew up in worse. We're all equipped to survive this way, just don't be stupid and it should be instinctual.

We've pretty much wiped out wolves here, so you only need to worry about cougars and bears, and coyotes only attack runners. Cougars won't go near a fire, so that leaves the bears. For bears you need to make a slapstick, they avoid loud noises.

I live in California so I only really have to worry about bears, the cold at night, and finding a water source. Food is easy since there are jack rabbits everywhere but you can't eat only jackrabbit for more than a week or you will get rabbit starvation so I need to find at least one other food source if I'm staying longer than a couple days(probably a coyote). Pretty much the same where I live, with out a rifle you'd be fucked, and still survival is iffy even well equipped. About the only thing you could do would hope for clear weather and iron man it due south hoping to run into something ,although historically that hasn't worked too much better than digging in (see Franklin Expedition, among others)

We used to spend a week in the woods with friends when I was that age.
Granted I am in my 30's. Kids used to play outside alone and by themselves from about that age throughout the 80's and 90's and of course before.

So long as you have shelter and water, Japanese mountains are fucking easy mode. They're some of the most abundant mountains in the world in terms of wild, edible vegetation. You could easily survive just on the wild turnips for a week if you had to.

Nigga I just finished watching a 7 episode series on Bigfoot done by Les Stroud (Survivorman).
He went to every big foot area in the world and tried every method to get footage or some proof they existed. Millions of special devices, cameras and everything.
As expected nothing fucking happened and there still exists no proof of them.
The fact is if these creatures existed in any decent number which they'd probably have to in order not to go extinct then we'd have had plenty of encounters by now.
I am nearly 100% certain that Bigfoot does not exist.

I don't dispute your points but without more hard evidence I think I will choose to remain a skeptic.
I just feel that if they did exist and in decent numbers we'd have come across them more often and come across more obvious evidence of them having been in areas more often.
Sure some people have reported sightings (usually at night) but the eyes can play tricks on you easily in the woods especially at night... I have had it happen to me before.
