I don't understand why you trashed all your cheap and solid space shuttles to pay the Russians for sending your satellites into space and then try to redevelop the whole wheel to have a private space travel sector. That's totally moronic but maybe that's what you Americans are.

>>
>>75908155
NASA got spooked when they lost 2 shuttles to mistakes
they were insanely expensive for launching sattelites, but for moving humans to and from space they're pretty good
>>
>>75908155
The shuttle was primarily built to put together the space station, which it did. Meanwhile the russian space station is still in pieces in the atmosphere. Besides from what a majority of scientists say the ISS is meme science, I care more about our drones exploring then Ivan being a space taxi.
>>
>>75908155
The shuttles had to be rebuilt bolt by bolt every fucking time and kept blowing up. It was really inefficient.

NASA is running SLS now and SpaceX looks awesome.
>>
>>75908595
Well you live in a socialist country so I could care less about your opinion on the free market. Whether the government needs vehicle parts for a fleet or a sattelite in space the labor and funds go to a company to get it done. Government contracts are common practice in every industry. It's hardly Space Xs fault they had no competition.

No they weren't

The shuttles were shitty in every aspect
Safety
Cost
Capabilities

We could have literally 500% the pressurized volume of the ISS for the same cost if we kept the Saturn V around.

Fifteen skylabs. For the same cost as the ISS.

Don't believe anyone when they say the shuttle was good at ANYTHING but wasting money, killing astronauts, and holding back space travel 40 years
>>

I don't get why they have to be reusable. Simply crash them into London when the fuel is out.
>>
>>75909246
because they could
it'd be nice if they were reusable in the sense of a car being reusable after drive to work and back, and not reusable in needing a complete rebuild every time they went to space
>>
>>75909246
Or strap some parachutes on them instead of wasting more weight on fuel for re-entry.
But hey, at least it looks cool
>>
>>75909246
The idea was that they would be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper if they had a few shuttles on rotation that they reused but because they had to be refit, rebuilt, inspected for launch each time it made it way more expensive.

The same idea behind spacex landing rockets but it seems like spacex is on a better path.

You could care less? I think you mean 'couldn't care less'.

>socialist country
not any more socialist than yours, other than more extensive benefits systems. America is way more socialistic when it comes to military, government contracts etc... It is a huuuuge fucking bureaucracy even compared to Norway.

Government subsidies does not count as free market capitalism.

In Sweden in the 1930s when it was a free market, could I just ask the government to pay for my space shuttle business or whatever it may be? No, of course not. That is a socialistic subsidy that doesn't exist in a true free market.

Sure, government contracts mean the government outsources the work to companies that are not directly government founded. But they are however government funded. Which means they are literally subidized.

That's true, but he designed reusable rockets and fully autonomous infrastructure for them. He created something that NASA and Roscosmos coudn't design for over 40 years.
>>
>>75908462
Not in general no. ULA also has a government contract, that involves direct subsidy. Not free market. Space procurement in the US also requires mostly domestic production, again not free market. Same goes for paying for development, you offer one company massive upfront investment which means other competitors can't bid at the same level in the future.

No. The Shuttle predates the ISS by almost 20 years. It was even before Mir.

Mir was destroyed because it was beyond repair. Skylab on the other hand was destroyed because the Shuttle was late.

FTFY. There have been shit loads of designs for RLVs, boostback isn't even a new concept. In most cases the concepts were never funded or but in some they were lucky enough to be culled in budget cuts (e.g. X-33).

I hope the launch a used rocket this year. It seems like they improve after each landing.

What's even better is they are launching a Dragon 2 capsule to land on Mars in 2018 and will launch a mission every 2 years afterwards. Hopefully, Congress will hand over all of that money the SLS Rocket is sucking up and give it to Spacex.
