Yeah. He was breaking the will of the South, and the apartheid there. Drawing attention to the plight of the blacks. This much is true. The boycotts. The marches. The speeches. It was wholly American, and necessary at the time. It rang so true that conservative white America got behind him, and supported what he was about. No lie.
