The Soviets really showed themselves to be subhuman in WW2. They took enormous losses in manpower, tanks, planes and every other category imaginable. The difference was absolutely staggering. On top of that, they acted like savages when they started reconquering territory, raping and murdering their own as well as the enemy civilians. The Germans did a lot of shit as well, but this was generally organized executions. They rarely went out and tormented the civilian population on their own, like the Soviets.

In reality, they casualty rate was more than 2:1, despite the Germans being surrounded, without supplies and at a huge disadvantage. A lot of those soldiers were also incompetent Romanians and Italians, who were responsible for the flanks collapsing in the first place.
Taking Stalingrad was a huge strategic blunder by Hitler, as was his refusal to allow a breakout attempt.

Basically, stalin was a complete megalomaniac who had executed any staff with experience from WW1. Hitler was outnumbered and outgunned on a cataclysmic level, yet had COMPLETE domination against stalin, WHILE fighting the western powers simultaneously.

Actually quite the contrary on destroying their national identity. Much of the west during the first world war was making fun of Russia due to their inability to fight and mobilize their army. When the troika came into power, Trotsky created the Red Army, and Stalin eventually led the Red Army to fight against Hitler, they didn't destroy their national identity/pride (nor did they care all that much for nationalism to begin with) but if anything, they helped it from the start.
