It is worth less than a human, though, when it escapes its enclosure and threatens innocents. It should be shot then, or tranquilised when there is enough time to do so. The child, however, is an extension of its parents because of its age. The parents were criminal and neglecting, so we can't speak of innocence. There is no reason to expect from a zoo to shoot such a magnificent animal because of some crooks who can't pay attention to their spawn. It should have been tranquilised, and if that would still have lead to the death of that child, it would have been the unfortunate consequence of a very preventable accident.
The shit storm that would have ensued had that gorilla ripped that baby in half like it was about to would have been GLORIOUS.
