why is this allowed? we have pilot-less technology now, why the fuck should i trust my life to some middle aged loser who flies airplanes when a computer can do it far better?

there should not be any humans in the cockpit, then we wouldn't have crashes, humans are not perfect

there always needs to be a pilot to take over in case something goes wrong. Also its a fact that 80% of accidents occur because the pilot error or improper response to a minor-moderate malfunction of one of the flight systems that could have been avoided.

>>
>>75609553
That is, in theory true, but loss of power or some other catastrophic failure might mean you only have miliseconds to act, something that hasn't been resolved yet for drones, because again of the latency issues. My dad has been flying for 40 years though, by now many systems are now automated even way point flying, but for takeoff and landing or flying in bad weather, having someone at the controls is the norm.
>>
>>75610180
if i may piggyback on to this, >>75610180
is right OP, but many times the pilot error was due to lack of experience or miscommunication between the pilots. English is the official language of flight the world around, but you'd be surprised at how many pilots are senior in their respective organizations but who only have a tenuous grasp of the English language at best.

Have you never watched Air Crash Investigation??

The computers have literally crashed a few airliners in recent years by going apeshit and leaving the pilots powerless.

You're talking out of your arsehole m8.
>>
>>75610229
Basically this. Average, half-retarded people won't accept that a computer glitch brought an airplane down, they want a name so they can rant on Facebook using their Apple iPhones about how all pilots are lazy retards.

If I'm ever a jetliner pilot, and I realize the plane is going to crash, I'm going to nose it into the ground at full throttle. Surviving an air crash would be hell for your career and personal life.

What if we still had pilots but the plane can be taken over from the ground and landed remotely? Like, if there's a hijacking, just cut off the controls from the air.

If someone hijacks a plane, everyone is fucked. If someone breaks into the air traffic control room to override the plane, they could send an entire SWAT team to bust the door down and kill the motherfucker.

I guess that could also malfunction, though.

I remember the crash of the on the M1 of a 757 flying to Belfast here in NI (from London I think).

Fucking pilot turned off the wrong engine after the other engine exploded. Plane just fell like a rock out of the sky.

Apparently one of the survivors (sitting beside the on fire engine) actually realized that the pilot had just announced he was about to switch off the wrong engine.....but the guy didn't tell the stewardess because "he just trusted that the pilot knew what he was doing" kek

if you think that one is bad try Varig Flight 25. The Pilot tuned into the wrong compass heading. Instead of going due north east he went directly west. From my understanding:

>Engine 1 burst into flames

>Pilot smells smoke in cockpit and assumes it is coming from engine 2 (because of the AC system design)

>AC system design had been changed to other engine on this model and pilot didn't realize the change

>Pilot shuts off working engine 1

>Passenger notices but fails to report this fuck up

>Bad engine 2 is still powering plane to some extent

>Plane is 3 mins from runway when bad engine 2 completely explodes

>Too late to get good engine 1 restarted

>Plane drops like a rock and crashes a couple of hundred yards from runway

Avionics engineer here.

With enough redundancy and fault monitoring/override from the ground, it would be plausible for commercial aircraft to safely fly on their own without aircrew and achieve lower crash rates than we currently have since >50% are attributed to pilot error or failure to adequately respond to in-flight emergencies.

But pilots are cheaper than the cost and time/money lost to maintaining automated flight systems right now since the majority of the fleet are old ass 80s/90s birds. Too much Frankensteining going on to mod those old ass birds with modern equipment--shit breaks like crazy because of it. I still have nightmares from the mid-2000s TCAS mods.

the only thing I'd like to see more automated is the frequencies. Up in cruise, we are flying into different sectors that requires a different ground controller, and thus a different frequency that we have to manually tune in. People get the frequencies wrong and then end up not on any frequency and it becomes a shit show.

airplanes are not as automated as you guys think... it literally just does what WE tell it to do. nothing more, nothing less... well, sometimes less. the computers become retarded and we have to click the auto pilot off and manually fly sometimes. its weird. Cant 100% trust computers in the airplane, which is why they still have pilots.
>>
>>75620328

Takeoffs and landings are entirely automated. The pilot can take over if he wishes but they are there only because the FAA requires it. Airlines want to get rid of the First Officer but the FAA won't allow it.

>like to see anything less automated?
nah not really, because for the most part things are NOT automated. Again, the airplanes only do what WE tell them to do, so its not like its going to get a brain of its own and just do stuff. If we tell it to fly into a building, it will. We have to manually do a lot of stuff, such as tune frequencies, program the computer with waypoints we approve, tell the airplane when to start and stop the engines, apu, anti-ice, etc.

There is a lot of legacy dead weight involved. It would be a major change to do a cellular or military network for commercial aircraft. Especially would wide... There are also the lessons learned about communications in 911 and the failures of tech trying to fix it...

But there is great hope there! That will probably be one of the few things that actually will get fixed sooner than later. I just hope it does not take a disaster thing to make it happen either after it should be done or before it should be done.

nah, not really. That doesn't get you anywhere because they have the authority to ground you and shit like that, causing delays and causing you to get to your hotel later than what you wanted and thats like the most important thing to a pilot lol. I've gotten into a few kerfuffles, if you will, with like how to taxi to a certain spot and how its not possible and shit or something like that but never a full blown argument. There's a funny youtube video between a delta pilot and an atlanta controller where the pilot explodes on the frequency

>VFR fuckwads
eh, not exactly. They can't go up as high as we can during cruise and when it comes to landing, we are in a certain type of airspace where they aren't allowed to enter without approval. I have had like people below the airspace though that cause our TCAS (traffic collision avoidance system) to trigger and the airplane starts barking at us to climb or descent immediately. That's always fun, but super rare. Controllers are good at keeping an eye on that stuff.

By the way. When it comes to aircraft electronics the St Elmo's Fire thing scares the living shit out of us electron folks... nah, I did a university aviation program. airforce doesn't fly with humans as much as you would think. Nope, never had to do anything tricky. It's pretty safe up there my man. Overqualified? yeah, for what we do on a daily basis, however we are perfectly qualified if shit hits the fan. I have to go into a simulator every year, for a few days, and get nothing but emergencies after emergencies thrown at me. This doesn't include the mandatory yearly ground classroom training with like 4 tests or the yearly pilot physical exam. Private pilots are just retards who got a license and fly cessnas. What youre thinking of is corporate flying. That job CAN be good but you're on call and always risking losing your job. Youre the first to go at a corporate gig when their business isn't doing well.

>>75623335
All I can say bro is that we are so highly trained it would make you sick. We have to train, retrain, over and over and over again for our entire careers, yearly, with emergencies and all sorts of shit. Airplanes WANT to fly. it takes a lot for one to crash. Turbulence is nothing. here's a video showing how far a plane's wings can bend before breaking

ahah no thats a cool question. Theyre fine. Its the same air you're breathing in the back. There are filters on the ACM (air cycle machines, basically what gives you oxygen up at altitude), and when those filters start to become clogged they start to stink. So, if you ever have stinky air, its' because the filters need to be changed.

Yes, but that someone is hired by the company itself. Hired pilots weren't the ones that did 9/11, hijackers were.

If the controls are at ground, it means that it's useless for a hijacker to take control of the airplane. They'd have to take control of the airport, which is considerably harder.

Reading over other comments in the thread, a solution would be to have a 2-tier safety system:

You still have a pilot in the cockpit, in case automation fucks up, but also control can be forcibly re-taken from the cockpit in case of a hijacking event.

its a cultural thing. The captain in most asian countries have completely authority and it is considered disrespectful to challenge the captain, even when you know he's wrong... so the first officers (co-pilots) dont and they let the bad situation fully develop into a crash. Western societies have worked that issue out of their systems, and japan is the only asian country to follow suite. We are taught to challenge the captain if we see or know hes doing something wrong.

would you ever go on an aviation tour in North Korea...the one where they literally fly you around in their aging fleet (and by aging i mean 30-50 years old)

A lot of asian companies rely on the computers more as well for take off and landing.
>>
>>75626683
yeah bro, i totally would. They probably maintain them pretty well, actually (maybe). Those old airplanes are cool.

It wasn't that bad lol. It took over 13 to get home. We were in IMC for 3.5 of a 4 hour leg between Arkansas and Nebraska.

Corvus and then AS are my goals.

>>75626826
you're a stronger man than I, my friend. Even at the airlines, 3 hours and I'm about ready to run up and down the aisles screaming "NIGGER" out of frustration. Thats nuts tho, 3 hours solid IMC in a skycock. impressive.

If you only know how easy and how bad software and hardware security is in airports and airplanes you would be blown away

ASA is pretty great.Getting the new 737 MAX and now getting virgin america.

What do you guys fly

Remember folks.

Those google computer cars have run on the streets 0.000001% as much as our cars and the only real accident they have had is when the car pulled out in front of a on coming bus... It will be a very very long time before any real company risks 300 lives and a $300++ million dollar airplane to that shit...

i see those things at my home airport. they're cool looking. Wait, they're using them for pax or cargo?

How are your student loans? DDDDDD:
I've narrowed down my long term career to either Pilot or Police Officer.
>>
>>75626548
i see. I never really tought about the option of being a pilot before, but now it seems interesting.
two questions for you captain,
How often do you use autopilot? is it true that all comercial pilots do are takeoff and landings?
Next is what do you study at uni? do you have a career path after youre "done" with flying?
>>

Can confirm. Some of that shit is 10+ years old

if you go pilot, dont get married. you'll never be home.
>>
>>75627076
pilot all the way, brother. You're much more respected and girls fucking LOVE it. no joke. the amount of puss for just telling them I'm an airline pilot is insane. you get a lot of respect.

My students loans, because I did a college program, were super fucking high (around 90-100k) but you can go to your local flight school and just do them that way WHILE earning a degree in school. its a much better option

do NOT.. I fucking repeat DO FUCKING NOT do embry riddle. biggest waste of money there is. Its a good program but you pay over twice what everyone else is paying for the exact same shit.

>Even more so when I had to fly to your country with the international paperwork and all the shit paperwork you mexicans made us sign.
Yeah that is why i was asking.

PGR makes us sign a paper for everything we do, we need to report before starting to work, when we are done, how much we worked, when we want to buy fuel, where we stored that fuel, how much fuel we used in the end, in which car we are going to transport it, where we are going to work, for who, how much, etc.

8 years ago we didn't had the need to do any of this other than for buying fuel, drugs, cartel and other stuff increase paperwork we have to do every year.

Atleast its worth it, i make $300,000-500,000 every year in my piper pawnee.

I only have $5k in debt. I worked in college, had scholarships, and paid for my flight training out of pocket. If you're smart it's easily doable.

>>
>>75627100
yeha, like I said its something you probably didnt think about haha

>how often do you use auto pilot
you use it for climb, cruise, descent phases. Some guys hand fly up to altitude then engage it. It makes your life 100000% easier, trust me. hand flying is terrible.

>is it true all commercial pilots do are takeoff and landings
yes and no. We manually take off and land but you have to actually control the auto pilot during cimb, cruise, and descent. it doesn't do it for you. you have to push puttons for up and down, which commands the auto pilot, and you have to set the rate of which it climbs and descents and youre constantly adjusting it. You aren't sitting there doing nothing even with the auto pilot engaged, trust me.

>what did you study at uni
in college, i studied aviation. It was a flight training program. Its not required to be an airline pilot but it was definitely helpful. Most airlines require you to have a degree, and it doesn't matter what you get it in, honestly. But I would recommend a flight degree of some sort IF you know thats what you'll be doing for the rest of your life. It makes everything a little easier. Yeah, you have a pretty set career path. You may have to fly small airplanes (propellers) for a while after school to build hours before you go to the airlines, but every country is different. You might be able to go right into an airliner out of school/training. In the u.s., that isn't the case but where other countries have the upper hand is that they dont have the requirement to have so many hours before flying an airline airplane.

I love the job, man. You really have to love flying to do this job, though. If youre just so-so, then it might not be a fit for you. What I recommend is you go to your local small airport and ask for a 'Discovery flight'. Theyll take you up in a small airplane for an hour or so and you'll know right away whether or not you want to do that for the rest of your life

Squack VFR. Frequency changed approved, go fuck yourself. Oh wait you're not flying VFR. You're IFR. you're literally told what to do the entire fucking time you fly.

Hows knowing you'll never be a real pilot?
>>
>>75627429
fuck off, faggot. You retards just repeat numbers all day and say "hello" and "goodbye". You could easily be replaced by 12 year old that has a monster energy drink. Enjoy dying 13 years prematurely ya faggot. I bet you're new york or chicago center..... OOPS SORRY I WAS ON A LANDLINE. fag

There's a massive difference between Centers/TRACONS.

well at my freight job yes the paperwork was overwhelming. I don't fly into mexico with the airlines so its no big deal anymore. Yeah, the cartels are faggots. I bet thats why I always get a fucking m16 pointed in my face by your mexican military every time I used to land in Guadalajara, Saltio, Tuluca, etc.

>mm I've snapped some off but they were worn the fuck out

Interesting.....

That really should NOT happen....

Thank you for being cool! We always get official reports and hot-line shit... But most real big complainants are found out very anon when people can say it just like it is...

We worry about many things and many times little things get lost. Worn the fuck out cockpit switches seemed to be your input to us :))) Fix that stupid shit we will!!!
>>
>>75627350
dont do a multi-engine jet course. those are fucking stupid. get your commercial multi-engine (prop) with a single-engine add-on. You'll most likely have to become a CFI and teach for a while but its worth it. I loathed doing that but turns out it wasnt that bad and I liked teaching and learned a lot.

>>75627606
Nvm, i can tell youre still in training. We dont squack VFR in the airlines you fat fucking retard.
>>
>>75627634

And why exactly would I die 13 years early if all I say is hello goodbye? Because I sit down all day? Solid point there genius. It's not like there's hundreds of millions of jobs that require you to sit in a fucking chair.
>>
>>75627839
What do you call a 300 pound controller?

The skinny guy.
>>
>>75627738
your job is shit. this is literally all you do all god damn day, because I hear it all god damn day

"blah blah contact blah blah center on 118.75 goodday. Blah blah air climb FL370 and contact nigger center on 132.05 goodday".

learn how to fly a fucking airplane and then tell me your job is difficult. Theres a reason why it takes us like 5 years from no training to being in the right seat of an airliner, compared to your 4 months of training and right to JFK approach.
