Bond needs to go UK, like Eccleston's Dr Who. Honestly, what has the franchise got left at this point? It can either go full comedy spy gadget shit, or grimdark teh SPECTerrorits edgy teen shit, both of which it is vastly outcompeted in by many franchises, or it can go back to the one aspect of Bond which is a consistent staple. He's a distinctly British spy/secret agent/special agent.
Trouble is "British" is increasingly becoming camp and a sort of a joke at this point. On screen British is more and more becoming "America with camp". Basically a British bond is doomed to be a self aware absurdist comic act a la moonraker.
UK on the other hand is just a better fit for modern Bond. You get a lot more of this with Craig, where the character is consciously and earnestly a UK (leaning heavily English) patriot. It's stronger than the cosmopolitanly abstracted British of Brosnan or Dalton, and its impact makes Bond less of a parody and more of a character. It's the aspect of the modern Bonds that shines through a lot of the bullshit.
UK over British comes from basically UK television productions. Programmes made in England for an English audience for which -- outside of period dramas -- some stupid British stereotype simply will not work. It's a more authentic attitude and works better for Bond overall. At least for modern films.
Elba would suit that type of Bond. I didn't get too far into Luther, which was let down by the writing, not by the actors. Based on that I can see an Elba Bond working, and maybe saving the franchise from becoming a total joke. Another Moonraker or Die Another Day will kill Bond for a generation.
