The stronger Bernie looks, the weaker Hillary looks. It's a zero sum game. It also supports the narrative that Trump wants someone outside the system. Independents will eat it up, and so long as he's respectful and stresses the idea that he thinks Bernie loves America but is misguided, while Hillary is only our for herself, it will help him against her in the election. At the very least Bernouts won't vote for her to spite Trump. There's no way this is a losing play.
Trump knows how to take a seemingly complicated idea, and somehow turn it into a blunt statement that can be repeated easily and catches on with normal folk.
Since he's going up against an unapologetic socialist, Trump is going to bless the world with the slogan that will sell free market economics better than Adam Smith or Milton Friedman ever could.

It doesn't even matter who wins the debate. Bernie will not be the nominee Democratic nominee. As long as Trump is relatively nice and cordial and finds a little common ground, he stands to gain Bernie supporters, or at least demotivate some of them to vote against him.
I don't know who will win, and I completely believe trump can beat Bernie in a debate, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he let him win a little for the sake of building bridges.
