Open source seems to have been successfully monetized. Not long ago I was offered a job heading up a whole team of guys for a rather wealthy company with the specific intention of making an open source variant of some stuff for which there is not convenient open source option.
By being the first to the market, they would be able to get a tremendous ROI on widespread adoption and thereby free development for the future direction of their key real proprietary cash cow.

I don't think I understand. They're first to market, get tons of adoption, but how does that translate to anything with their proprietary software? They work together somehow?
Open source is definitely monetized in other ways, though. A lot of companies now require paid support for every piece of software they run, so plenty of shops are paying thousands on Redhat or MySQL support, or whatever else.

The results of what that software produces when they run it in private on their private data makes their main proprietary product superior to the competition.
Sorry to have to talk in circles about it, but it would be ungentlemanly of me to be specific. It would also make them more popular with a new client base for developing and managing a popular open source solution, giving them hiring access to good talent to keep the game going and other freebies like that.
