From a non-American point of view the Iraq war appeared as a selfish and life wasting war that only seeked to further destablilise the region in order for the US to turn against a man that they were previously on good terms with and was effectively their puppet at one point.
From an American point of view it's clear why they did what they did to Sadaam Hussein as America wouldn't be the richest nation in the world right now if it wasn't for them scrapping Hussein's reforms.
So it was a cunty thing to do but if your country's financial state is on the line - I'd probably have done the same thing.

Iraq was all kinds of fucked.
Originally the West heavily backed Iran, which had a monarchist government not dissimilar to Jordan, since it was adjacent to the Soviet Union. They were given cutting edge military equipment, and the US personally oversaw the development of an early nuclear program. Then there was a theocratic revolution there, which caused the US to cut off all ties and flip on them. The entire world was terrified that all muslims in the world would band together and revolt like Iran did, and as such Iran became the world's worst enemy.
Iraq, which was a mix of socialist and fascist(Baathist like Syria and Egypt) was relatively ignored by the world. After Iran revolted, the entire world urged Iraq to invade Iran, and they did; with the support of almost every major nation in the world. Despite that, despite use of chemical weapons(which the global community ignored), and despite Iran being virtually cut off on all fronts since it's revolution, it held Iraq back, and even turned the war around after six or so years of brutal trench warfare. Eventually they declared a ceasefire with almost nothing at all gained on either side. Three years later the Soviet Union fell, and Iraq, viewed as basically an ally, asked the US if it could invade Kuwait. With permission, they rolled into the country swiftly. Then almost everyone who supported them fighting Iran fucking steamrolled their entire military. They built up their entire army to fight Iran, then when they lost, they betrayed them and destroyed it so it wouldn't become a liability.
The second war was just a random excuse to start a war and intimidate Iran and Syria.
Sometimes I feel like the wars were used to make the Bush family and republicans be viewed as villains to help the Clinton's into office, too. The Bush family walked away with billions in oil profits and the Clinton's walked in to pretend to clean up the mess, or were supposed to in Hillary's case.

Don't forget Kuwait and other oil rich Pussy little emirates bank-rolled the Iraq-Iran War (then known as the Persian Gulf War.) After the Iraq war failed. The rich little neighbors said, Where is our money? So Iraq used it battle hardened troops to invade it's rich debt collecting neighbors.
Side note Bush was so afraid of another Vietnam. He was willing to let Iraq keep the northern Kuwaiti oil fields if he just withdrew from the cities. Iraq would have been the worlds largest oil producer, but hindsight is 20/20.

We supported Iraq all throughout their war with Iran, where they used the same exact weapons then that they did against the Kurds, who, provoked Iraq anyway by repeatedly attacking them. The weapons Iraq used, by the way, were all supplied by us.
We should have let them handle their business or at the very least warned them. Saddam not only LOVED the US, but he loved the West. But not anymore after we declared war on him and fucked their shit up.

You know, the US actually went out of their way to buy Communist weaponry from the black market for them. They also gave them chemical and biological weapons to use on Iran, the very same weapons which they alleged Iraq developed indigenously a decade later as justification for invasion.
I had a coworker who was iraq, one of the Christians to get out of there way way before shit hit the fan. He told me that saddam kept all the muslims in check. He even told me of a story of a little girl being kindnapped by muslims and their father happened to work for saddam. One word from saddam and two days later the little girl was back with her parents. That's just what he told me I can't verify it or anything. He said "just don't say anything bad about Saddam, and you're good." Then he said "muslims don't understand democracy you need to keep them controlled with opposition and force."
I though we invaded Iraq, because Suddam was using the chemical weapons we gave him to fight Iran, on his own people. And to prevent further embarrasment, we had to remove him from power. He was cool and all, but then he got paranoid, leading to craziness in his family, and we had to Old Yeller him. He had good motives, but he carried too much baggage to be left alone.
