Huge areas in Africa have become too dry to support agriculture, and rainfall is decreasing further because there's not enough vegetation to create clouds (simply put), so the dry areas keep growing. It's not impossible to do something against that, there are reforestation projects which successfully reclaimed patches of desert already. I know about the drought, I'm just saying ancient cultures managed to create massive irrigation systems using little more than hand tools and successfully managed to farm nearly desolate regions for resonable amounts of time. Native Americans had a massive irrigation systems in place in the incredibly arid regions of the American southwest something like 3000 years ago which managed to sustain their populations resonablly well for a time at least.

The ground has nutrients in it. If you just plant maize all the time, you suck it dry. Especially maize is a really heavy drain on it. Farmers with the least bit of knowledge will "cycle" (there's a word for it but I don't know it in English) between plants of varying 'strength' so that they don't suck the ground dry completely.
Ontop of that, these people probably suck at preparing the dirt properly.
