Please explain the Fermi Paradox then.
>>
>>74703180
You know the fermi paradox is a theory right faggot?
>>
No it doesn't. It just shows that there's a high probability of extraterrestrial life.
>>
>>74703308
The fact that we are live is enough proof.
>>
>>74701629
No, it says that from a logical perspective it's highly improbable that we're alone. "Indicates" and "proves" are two different things.
>>
>>74701629
there probably is life out there , but the distances are too far for it to matter.

unless someone figures out warp drive, it will never matter.
>>
>>74701629
The known universe is not that big desu senpai
If the condition of earth is one of the unique, then it's reasonable to say there's no other life around our galaxy
It's like you found some bush in the dessert. It'd be ultra rare that you wouldn't find another within radius of 10 miles. So the possiblily is too small to make me believe
>>
>>74703294
Why did you have to insult him?

>>
>>74701629
I wish. But it doesn't prove anything. The sad truth is that we're probably just all alone and meaningless.
>>
>>74703294
>fermi paradox is a theory
No dumbass, it's a contradiction. The math says that by all rights we should have actual evidence of extraterrestrial life, we don't. That's the problem. If they're anywhere as numerous as Drake equation says, we should have run into them or vice versa. The implications are thus: The drake equation is wrong and life is rare, the ETs are hiding from us, or we are alone.
>>
>>74701629

what does that even mean?

It's mathematically impossible that we're the only intelligent life in the universe, but I also say that it's most likely impossible that we'll ever meet any other intelligent life. At least not for thousand and thousands of years.
>>
If I'm ever floating by myself on a boat in the middle of the Pacific, I'll be sure to remind myself that I'm not alone because there's people in Siberia
>>
What is the possibility of us being the most advanced civilization in the Virgo Supercluster? Maybe other civilization fell for the Isamic Caliphate trap and live in some theocratic shithole waiting for us to free them?
>>
Considering the size of the known universe the mathematical chance that we're alone is so infinitesimally small that it's not really worth considering otherwise without some kind of proof.

But because of the distance between habitable planets its quite unlikely that we'll ever meet any other advanced civilizations without huge jumps in space travel tech (warp drives and shieeet).
>>
>>74704229
>mathematically impossible

It's not mathematically impossible.

The best we can say is that it is mathematically improbable - even so highly improbable that it is NEARLY certain that there is other intelligent life.

Not really.

We have no reason to believe that life is common: we have no data to suggest it is.

Life could be nearly impossible, a 1/1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 occurrence (I didn't count the zeroes, but you get the idea) and the only reason we exist is because we HAVE to exist in order to observe ourselves. We can only observe a universe in which we exist, so we cannot take our own existence as any indication of the probability of life existing.

We may, in fact, be alone.

>It's actually the worst possible method if you are talking about space.
What other methods do we have, non radio wavelengths. Anything shorter than visible light is subject to far too much attenuation from dust and is going to be overpowered by stars.

Anything longer than radio is subject to far too much size propagation requiring impractically large receiving dishes, and background noise.

Radio is a happy range that bypasses most obstructions, isn't naturally very common at our useful wavelengths and is reasonable in size and power use.

>A space faring race must have something with a low ping.
"Because it depends on classical communication, which can proceed no faster than the speed of light, it cannot be used for faster-than-light transport or communication of classical bits."

Low ping, still only slower than the speed of light. It's almost like you have no fucking idea what you are talking about but heard about this cool quantum thing and think it's a solution.

Ants run into humans every day, but we don't communicate. The ants can't even perceive our existence. Even as they perceive evidence of our existence they can't comprehend what that evidence means. The ants that live in the foundation of my house will never know the address of that house, or what an address is, or what a street is, or what a house is.

If there are other sentient beings in the universe capable of interstellar or intergalactic travel then they are, by virtue of that capability alone, a bonifide higher order of being than we are, like we are to the ants. You can try all day to communicate with the ants, demanding that they take you to their leader and trying to teach them what you know about science, but they simply can't hear your. They may feel the vibrations of your voice, but they will never understand its meaning, or even that it has meaning.

Also, the lifespan of a worker ant is only a few years, so a human can live 20-30 times as long as the oldest worker ant. The odds of any given ant colony coming in contact with a human on earth are FAR better than the odds of a sentient species coming into contact with another sentient species, but ant colonies surely come into existence, run their course, and die off without any human contact at any point.

I don't think you know what perceiv means, so here's the defintion.

Now, in the example given where an ant is picked up by a human, does the ant:

No, it does not. All it knows is that some force greater than itself is fucking with it.

That's like saying "if I don't see it, it doesn't exist."

There could be innumerable reasons why a nearby alien civilization wants nothing to do with Earth or humanity, most notably them not wanting to step on the political landmine that is first contact with a post-atomic age civilization.

And they could just not care about us at all. If intelligent life is common, then it's not worth interacting with unless you need to.

Of course no one can prove we're not alone but consider:

1) The way complex patterns form in nature, even outside of biology.
2) The fact that we see biological patterns all around us from the extremely simple right up to the complex
3) Life itself as a replicating pattern is incredibly adaptable to lots of conditions. Once life starts replicating it's unstoppable.
4) Trillions of planets over billions of years.

It's just not realistic to think we're the only ones.
>>

Either way, the amount of time we have been here isn't really what is in question. The question is the amount of time other planets with the ability to harbor life have had.

this

There are likely hundreds or thousands of species on earth that we haven't observed yet in any single deep trench of the ocean. It would be dumb to assume that they don't exist simply because we haven't seen them. Now consider the total land mass of the universe compared to an ocean trench.

I also think the assumption that a life sustaining planet must look like ours (similar temperature, liquid water, etc) is folly. Alien lifeforms could work on a totally different biological paradigm than earth life. They could breath methane, drink liquid nitrogen, eat silicone, and fart oxygen.

I just looked this because I had not heard of it but how is this paradox a paradox at all?
If there are allegedly million or even billions of planets with life that does not guarantee extraterrestrials visiting earth at all.
Of those millions of planets with life only a very small percentage (or indeed perhaps even none) of them will have developed sapient life of that percentage that have sapient life only a few (or none) of them may have developed a civilization advanced enough to reach space, and then a even smaller percentage of that percentage that are capable of interstellar travel, and of that percentage yet another that even knows earth exists and can reach it and then you have to assume that whatever infathonably sized percentage of a percentage of fraction of a fraction of these races both wants to go to earth and decides to come here.
It's really not all that strange at all.
Space is big and earth is but one of a near infinite number of planets.

The reason we assume that is because from the very beginning of life forming, specific conditions were needed at every single step. There is no reason at all to assume what you just have. sure, but we don't know what those conditions could be. We only know of the conditions under which life on earth formed, and even those conditions include a large variety of temperatures and pressures. They still need oxygen.

This also completely avoids the fact that we have not seen it in any other conditions. There is no reason to look where we have not found any sign, especially when we can be looking at planets where we know it is actually possible in the first place.

This is still not to mention why no contact? We aren't developed enough, but surely that doesn't mean they are not capable as well? If we want to believe that just because the Universe is so and so large, then we also have to believe that because it is so and so large, there is no reason intelligent life out there some where has not become extremely developed.

The only alternative is that it's only possible that we can become advanced to a certain extent, limited by what science can do, against what it can tell us is possible; and that there is no way to make interplanetary contact because life forming planets are too great a distance, or 'some' sort of obstacle cannot be scaled.

-taking into the drake-equation the probability of every step of the know evolution on earth from simple elements through abiogenesis to bacteria and so on...
-taking into account all the we know from scientific research from our solar system and beyond (protocell/bacteria/intelligent species)
- probability of the unique events to have occurred for the earth-moon collision and several extinction events

>no clear evidence of abiogenesis on moon and mars
>no evidence of intelligent species, type2-civ or type3-civ throughout all the observable galaxies

after billions of billions of dollars of scientific research we must take into account the evidence of absence of life ! not only intelligent or primitive life but also bacterial and protobacterial form of life.

Finely someone that gets it, space is vast and the distance between inhabited worlds would be great. Most likely two interstellar societies would never make contact with each other, let alone meet, before one or the other dies out.

I wonder sometimes if the only evidence of our existence to reach Aliens would be TV and radio signals and the Aliens ended up hearing about World War II and 9/11 and watching Maury and Ancient Aliens. They'd literally think we're fucking hopeless retards.

My point was that they may simply have no motivation to do so. Im curious, how would we have found evidence of actual intellligent civs with the technology we have at the moment?

Radio signals like the ones we use today would most likely drown out in noise when it reaches us unless we were the specific target of the transmission.

100% of the planets we have fully explored contain life.

It proves that the observable universe is very, very big and that it's mathematically improbable that we're the only form of sentient life in it, but no, it doesn't prove we're not alone. That proof will come in due time.

Andromeda is fucking huge, it's getting closer and closer and will tear the milkyway apart ;_;
>>

In about four billion years. And it won't tear us apart, we'll just merge with it and create one big, beautifully diverse galaxy.

:)

>>74734071
FUCK YOU, I don't want your diversity, fuck.

They will literally destroy each other in the collision, and there there is a little dingus galaxy nearby looking at us and laughing while that happens..
