uncanny valley plays a huge part into society and it's views/acceptance towards robotics, the further you climb towards human likeliness the more repulsive the robots become.
I don't think we'll ever get 100% human looking robotics, as when we come to that point there will probably be some ethical regulations stating that they have to look different, and instead will look something like the androids from I-Robot (the will smith movie)

A friend of mine works for a Swiss security company and he says their facial recognition systems work extremely well, even from a distance and they get contracted to install them all the time. He also said, sometimes, when "petty crime" is caught on cctv they installed, police just claim the quality of the footage wasn't good enough to identify the person or get a clear view, but they only say that for 2 reasons: a) they can't be bothered going after some thief or small-time dealer and b) they don't want you to know what their cameras and security systems are capable of.
