Most people are unaware that after the allied bombing, all of germany had massive food and medicine shortages. Typhus was prevalent all over, not just in camps. Its just that all the available medicine was given to citizens instead of the jews.
Read "The Patton Papers". It explains a lot about it from first hand accounts from General Patton's letters home to his wife.
It's why the allied soldiers kept the jews fenced in once they liberated the camps. They were full of disease.
