To some extent, that has been true for all of history.
The Internet has simply exploded and enhanced that smug sense of superiority exponentially. For the first time in human history, I can call up a how to video or a real life example of almost anything within 15 seconds. Within hours, I can find source training materials, blogs detailing experiences, forums in which experts converse, etc.
However, that in and of itself wouldn't be terrible. It's in the foundation of the current youth culture where the cracks begin. Society in the United States has never been close this stratified or segregated. Elites of both parties raise children who literally never work a day in their lives, often don't play contact sports, and, again due to the Internet, do not even have to have ITL contact with anyone outside of their social circles/classes. They are also told by their helicopter parents that they truly are special merely for existing. This is not a historical anomaly for the upper classes, but even 100 years ago, they still had to speak to their tailors occasionally, or a tutor or a stable hand. Now even those interactions can be eliminated if so desired.
As many of us have learned in our lives, a lack of hard work and accomplishment often leaves us feeling the complete opposite of special or valuable.
The middle class has essentially achieved an almost identical level of isolation due to technological advances coupled with the rise of anonymous suburban living and a fairly transient population.
These younger kids often have no accomplishments or sense of proportion, or even any idea of what it's like to come home exhausted after a long day working as landscaper, fast food cook, or whatever teens used to do when they worked. (And yes, I understand this isn't just helicopter parents- declining unskilled labor jobs, illegal aliens, etc all contribute to this as well).

So now you have a generation that is somewhat lost and directionless, raised in an era in which the commandant Thou Shalt Not Judge Me replaced a clearly defined system of morality. They often are extremely well meaning and searching to be a part of something meaningful. They also have an extremely fair list of criticisms about previous generations, unlike their Boomer grandparents.
These kids use social media validation in place of valuable relationships, pornography in place of sex, slacktavist outrage in place of the normal fistfights young men used to find themselves in, etc.
All they need now is a cause to belong to, and social justice was a very attractive one. It had the illusion of self sacrifice, punishment for "unearned" "privelege", self castigation, penance, and, most importantly, it was transgressive. Transgressive in the sense that it broke the only commandment with which they were raised: THOU SHALT NOT JUDGE ME.
They finally were able to judge the shit out of people. And through social media isolation, they were able to create an echo chamber of positive reinforcement.

Now, with a cause of some sort, they sought to make changes. Without any life experience whatsoever with truly diverse people and opinions, they quickly sought validation that they were truly righteous.
And no one is so righteous as an armchair critic of anyone, especially when doing so in 160 characters or less.
They watch a few videos on a topic, say, teaching in an inner city school. And then they begin the criticism, without ever having even met a teacher or student from the inner city. YouTube videos somehow replaced actual experince.
This isolation through lack of shared cultural experiences also appears to have deeply eroded their empathy. (In that respect, they are very much like Boomers).
