The villain is left unfulfilled. We know the villain instinctively because he's the one off the correct path to contentment. He doesn't create - if he did, we'd admire him. He's a leech.
Of course, we also usually don't admire or care about the "hero" in most media because he promotes self-sacrifice for the community, a value most people feel obligated to pay lip service to, but ultimately we can sense is off and therefor resist.
The person we should admire is the person who seeks fulfillment. Adventurers. Scientists. Artists. These are what we instinctively aspire to be.
