small businesses could be successful, but whenever they did they would just get bought out by on of the larger corps. if you don't sell out or obey your new masters, they will just buy your supplier and jack prices up, or buy the land your store is on and jack up rent, or just sell at loss because they can eat it and you can't.

Remember Standard Oil, the allege monopoly? It had 375 competitors, all of which had higher prices than them, with the fragments resulting from its breakage also having higher prices than standard. Hell, before standard, prices of oil and it's products were ten times higher, and there were less companies. Who would have thunk.

And even then, people only make deals they deem beneficial, so both parties profit from a buy out.
If small business doesn't sell but supplier does, small bussiness can find another supplier and the one that ramped up prices will lose business.
