I study German which is pretty easy because its very similar to dutch, I also study the German history from books and the German pagan history.

the letter is from March '41
The 6th army was nearly exclusively used in Russia and the east in general. Operation Barbarossa was started in June, so 3 months before the letter was written. Also that he was in then barracks at the moment means that he was off-duty at tthe moment.

I like seeing letters like these. One often forgets the individual aspects of the war.
These soldiers had wives, kids, a home hundreds and thousands miles away. They were scared to never see it again and having a little piece of this in form of a letter must have been incredibly relieving.
My grandfather was a Radio-operator as well and was too departed in Russia. Chances are that he was also in the 16th army, but I can't check now, bc his Soldiers-ID is in my dads apartment.
He did came home, but not as the same man. He apparently had to shoot a young russian boy, probably a young partisan and never recovered from it.
He even smashed a portrait of him, wearing a uniform. Must have been a scary scene. My mother was 10 or so at the time and she watched him stare at it for a couple minutes and from one moment to another, he grabbed, smashed and spit on it. Wonder what was going through his mind at this moment.
Frightening what killing someone can make to a person.
Sadly, I could never talk about this with him, as he died before I was born, but he very rarely talked about the war anyway.
