If you want real time battle as opposed to the more abstracted kind I'd suggest the total war series.
If you want real time battle, like sci fi, and don't mind an older game I'd suggest Sword of the Stars. Avoid Sword of the Stars 2 though, it's pretty divisive to say the least.
