My great great grandfather was a traveling teacher from germany. My grandmother lived near the Polish/USSR border in 30's (on the Polish side). Told stories how they were throwing food over the river for the starving people on the soviet side but soldiers were just taking it away and dumping into the river so no one could get it.
In some way it was way more than just a famine in USSR. Ukrainian farmers weren't happy about the idea of giving everything they've got to the soviets so Stalin took everything they've got to suppress the resistance
