These were strong adaptations in the past, back when the Mediterranean and various mountain ranges were a significant barrier to travel. Europeans were able to build very cooperative societies with strong governments, very low corruption, and at least basically regulated markets fostering enormous growth that propelled them past the rest of the world.
Now technology makes travel much easier. With effectively no barrier between Europe and the billions who didn't make such a leap, naturally people will be desperate to move to European societies to enjoy the things Europeans have.
Where before, when there was only other euros around, the high trust+high altruism greased the wheels immensely, those traits now work against them. They want to bring in people to make their lives better because it's the kind answer. They put complete faith in the newcomers to change to fit in, because that's what they really expect to happen.
They have a really really hard time accepting that the differences between then and everyone else is genetic, and that kicking the gates open is just going to fill their societies with people who can't be trusted the same way and are out for their own clan rather than omni-directional niceness. People who will certainly not be running the place as pluralistic democracies once they're in charge.
This reluctance is part of the same package of traits. Accepting that any group isn't fundamentally the same as them contradicts that trusting impulse. They feel down to their bones that that isn't right.
