The funniest thing is when you foreigners bitch about Fahrenheit. You claim to be scientists yet you can't even interpret a linear plot? No wonder we're the only ones who landed on the Moon.
>>
>>74154318
The real answer:

It's important for us to know what we're talking about.

It's not important for you to know what we're talking about, and it's not important for us to know what you're talking about.

We all know how long a mile is, how much 20 Lbs. weighs, and how cold 32 degrees Fahrenheit feels.

If you don't know these things, it's really not our problem. And no, we don't want your metric system, our system works fine, we see no need to replace it.

>But then it would be easier for people in the REST of the world to . . .

Yes, it would be easier on the rest of the world.

And that is also irrelevant.

Canadians use it too.

It "sounds nice" to use the metric system, but realistically, the numbers are either too big or too small. Am I a hundred and something centimeters, or am I 6 feet? See, small numbers easy to use.

Also, when I write date, I write year, month, day. It's easier, and better for categorization.
>>
>>74154712
No shit, if it ain't a fucking multiple of ten, these motherfuckers can't count to it, apparently.

It's no coincidence that the USA needs to teach Common Core math. With fucked up measurements like that...

because we aren't fucking sheep. When we MUST use the metric system like when using metric tools, we just call it the fucking mexican system.

>>
Metric is still used in the sciences in the US, and it's not like people don't know metric over here

But think about Fahrenheit for example, as opposed to Celsius. Imperial is great for everyday life.
>100 F = very uncomfortably hot
>0 F = very uncomfortably cold
>75 F = comfortable
>100 C = boils water, gives severe burns after short contact
>0 C = cold but not really that bad
>75 C = will still fuck your shit up

No John, you are the foreigners

We use both, fuck off. We just find Imperial to be more useful for everyday use.

Imperial is more precise for everyday human measurements. Yuropoors are not people anymore since they can't own guns.
>>
>>74155231
It's just what you are used to in your daily life. 0F tells me nothing and neither does 100F. Let alone that temperatures feel differently depending on humidity levels.

. . . and buried a probe in the North Pole of Mars at triple the intended velocity because half the NASA team was working in ft/s and the other half in m/s. There's not even a constant in the linear conversion equation for those two.

Just a comment. I can use both systems with equal facility, but back in the day the Imperial system required a lot more mental arithmetic. Because the units were so heterogeneous, there was less chance of making a power-of-ten error. One had a feel for the size of each unit - thou, 1/64, inch, yard, chain, mile or dwt, oz, lb, stone, cwt, ton etc. This feel is not so obvious with powers of 10. We put something into a calculator and hope the result is not 10x too big or too small, without any feel for what order of magnitude to expect. Before the days of calculators one would do a rough parallel mental calculation alongside the slide rule, so you always had the answer within about 20%, even for arbitrary expressions raised to arbitrary powers.

with these fucked up and edgy measurement conventions it's a wonder of nature that the americlaps count in a decadic system. i mean why not go all the way and teach children to count in 7-adic system? or binary?

It actually comes from a time where there were no computers, and people had to do math themselves. It was easier to work with things like powers of 12 rather than say 10/100/1000 because more things divide into 12 than 10 (1/2/3/4/6) rather than 10 (1/2/5)

you might laugh, but the reason base 10 is used universally is because we have 10 fingers. it's simply the most natural. you go up from 1 to 10, or shifted from 0 to 9 and after reaching it, you increase the 10^1 counter by 1 and so on. and anything above base 10 becomes obscure since you begin to use letters. in base 12 you go from 0 to 9, then 10, A, B. how fucked up is it when you count B-A and say it's of course 1!
>>
>>74158149
>and people had to do math themselves.
Try to convert square feet into square acres without calculator and suddenly suicide sounds like a nice option.

>because more things divide into 12 than 10 (1/2/3/4/6)
True dozen is a savior fo illiterate popel. You can pay a shilling to 3 negros and they can divide it equally even if they don't know math. Just put coins into 3 same size piles. Give them 100 cents and they will kill each others. Problems start when calculations require something more then dividing dozen into qual parts but well illiterate people don't need that.
>>
>you might laugh, but the reason base 10 is used universally is because we have 10 fingers
I know. Both 10 and 12 are small enough to be comprehended by human mind 10 has advantage as we have 10 fingers. 12 has more integer dividers. Both are viable.

>and anything above base 10 becomes obscure since you begin to use letters
Nope. You still use numbers. 11 and 12 will get their own single letter number.
>>
>>74154947
>Am I a hundred and something centimeters
but you wouldn't say this, you'd say 'im 1.8 meters tall' or whatever. That's no worse than 'im 5 foot and 9 and a half inches'.

where would you use different base systems in anything but computers? we could argue how the numbers 10 and 11 are represented in base 12, but the point stands that the times table completely changes. it's not like you just add 2 numbers and count as usual since 12 in base 10 is not the same as 12 in base 12. we only need base 10 and base 16 for computers, everything else is autism and for burgers.

Yes you need only one. The question is the choice of the base. 10 or 12 are most viable options.

well perhaps you are smarter than me, because i think that all other systems are too counter-intuitive for every-day purposes. could you count 9x9 in base 12 without looking it up? if you can't, how do you expect ordinary people to do it?
